Atlas Direct’s insurance plan is a highly specialized fixed-indemnity insurance product tailored to the needs of Direct Primary Care (DPC) patients.
Because it was tailored to the needs of DPC patients, the Atlas Direct insurance plan does not cover a wide variety of medical services that are covered by comprehensive major-medical plans. Among the many things that it does not cover are medications, primary care, labs, and basic imaging services.
Thus, the Atlas Direct DPC Program’s insurance plan is not a substitute for comprehensive major-medical health insurance plans such as:
- The Bronze, Silver, and Gold plans sold on the insurance exchanges.
- The major-medical plans offered by many employers to their employees.
- Government-sponsored major-medical plans like Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA.
On the other hand, the Atlas Direct insurance plan is simultaneously all of the following things:
- A limited-benefit plan because it only covers only a limited set of medical services.
- A fixed-indemnity plan because it pays predetermined fixed amounts directly to covered persons.
- A supplemental plan because it can be used to supplement comprehensive major-medical coverage.
- A non-coordinated plan because it does not coordinate its benefits with other insurance coverage (meaning that Atlas Direct will pay covered persons for covered claims regardless of whether another insurance plan is also covering the same medical event.)
- A group plan because it is sponsored by the Direct Care Foundation.
