The Atlas Direct DPC Program (“Atlas Direct”) complements Direct Primary Care by giving DPC patients the chance to combine membership in the Direct Care Foundation with access to a fixed-indemnity insurance plan that was tailored to needs of Direct Primary Care patients.

Coverage includes fixed-dollar payments for:

  • Hospital admissions
  • Hospital confinement
  • Emergency room visits
  • Skilled nursing
  • Ambulance transportation
  • Cancer treatments
  • Childbirth
  • Hospice care

439 surgical and diagnostic procedures

Please note, however, that even though that list of benefits may seem extensive, our coverage is far less extensive than the coverage offered by comprehensive major-medical health insurance plans.

That’s because the Atlas Direct insurance plan excludes a wide variety of medical services and products, including primary care, dental, vision, infertility, cosmetic surgeries, and substance abuse treatments. We also exclude prescription drugs, basic imaging procedures, and lab work since a large number of DPC patients can already access those items at wholesale prices through their Direct Primary Care doctors.

Thus, while it is true that Atlas Direct was designed to be a good complement for Direct Primary Care, Atlas Direct’s insurance component is definitely not a substitute for comprehensive major-medical health insurance and we recommend that anyone seeking comprehensive health insurance consult with a licensed insurance agent or visit their state’s health-insurance marketplace for comprehensive-coverage options.

Please note that some states place restrictions on the surgeries and medical procedures that Atlas Direct’s insurance plan is allowed to cover. Thus, in those states, fewer than 439 surgeries and medical procedures may be covered. Please refer to the Certificate of Coverage and Schedule of Benefits that apply to your state of residence for the applicable list.

Also note that Atlas Direct does not include the cost of Direct Primary Care. Direct Primary Care has to be obtained from a DPC clinic, which will bill for its services entirely separately from, and in addition to, the cost of Atlas Direct’s insurance coverage.
