The answer to this question depends on a person's overall insurance coverage, including not only their Atlas Direct coverage but also each of the other insurance plans under which they may be covered.

To understand why overall coverage matters, please understand that Atlas Direct’s fixed-indemnity insurance product pays its benefits directly to covered persons only, rather than to providers. The covered persons are then free to utilize those payments in any way they wish.

As a result, neither Atlas Direct as a whole nor its insurance component in particular is legally responsible for covering any part of any medical bill since the insurance component’s only legal responsibility is to pay the fixed amounts specified under our coverage documents directly to covered persons.    That implies that a person who is covered by Atlas Direct’s insurance plan may end up being 100% personally legally responsible for paying providers unless that person also has coverage under other insurance plans—in which case those other plans may be responsible for some or all of the costs billed by providers.

Thus, when considering Atlas Direct’s insurance coverage, please understand that our plan does not undertake any legal responsibility for paying medical bills in the way that comprehensive major-medical plans do (which is, typically, to promise to cover all costs after deductibles, copays, and coinsurance amounts have been paid by their policyholders.)

If you are interested in obtaining comprehensive major-medical coverage that will be legally responsible for paying all or part of your medical expenses, we recommend that you consult with a licensed insurance agent or visit your state’s health-insurance marketplace for comprehensive-coverage options.
